Breaking Barriers
Breaking Barriers is a program sponsored by Redemption Christian Church to minister locally by providing English language training to local non-English speaking adults. At the beginning of the semester, adults wishing to learn English sign up to take part in English language classes held at Redemption Christian Church - Jasper Campus. Teachers with the help of sponsors and conversation partners provide instruction and practice with the English language.
-
Classes are broken into a fall semester and a spring semester like the local schools. Classes take place in the evenings twice a week, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. (Eastern) at our Jasper Campus. Students will be sent a calendar of specific days and times for that semester after they enroll.
-
A few weeks before the start of each semester a link will be provided below for people to enroll. Because Breaking Barriers relies on volunteers and limited space, enrollment may be limited. If more people enroll than space will allow, those who sign up first will get priority and the rest will be put on a waiting list.
-
The cost for students is just $10 per semester.
-
The classes are held at Redemption Christian Church - Jasper Campus:
1450 Energy Drive, Jasper, IN 47546
How To Become A Sponsor?
Breaking Barriers relies on the generosity of volunteers, sponsors, donors, and Redemption Christian Church to operate. Sponsors are volunteers assigned a specific student (or students) that they sponsor by:
Making a donation of $50 to help pay for curricular materials and supplies.
Attending each Tuesday evening class from 6:00 to 6:20 p.m. (Eastern) to practice conversations in English with their sponsored student(s).
Texting, emailing, or messaging their student(s) twice a week with conversation and encouragements.
Praying for their sponsored student(s) regularly.
Attending the Celebration Night with their sponsored student(s), which is the last class of the semester from 6 to 8 p.m. (Eastern)
We understand things come up and you may have to miss a night, but please try to attend as much as possible.
How To Be A Snack Volunteer?
Another way that people can support the Breaking Barriers program is by providing snacks for one or more sessions. The Breaking Barriers classes are 2-hour sessions and small snacks make it a more pleasant experience. Snacks can be simple store-bought items, such as cookies, chips, crackers, etc. or something you make and bring in. A few weeks prior to the start of the Breaking Barriers semester, a link will be made available below where people can sign up for one or more of the class dates to provide snacks for the class.
